~* PERFECTLY POISED PUMPKINS *~

PPP2.jpg (88965 bytes) PPP3.jpg (107889 bytes)

I have been making pumpkins in one form or another for several years, including painted fabric pumpkins and block printed pumpkins. For this gallery hop, I thought I’d do a painting using my stacked, cloth pumpkins as inspiration. This pumpkin watercolor is influenced by the fraktur artwork that I love, along with some whimsical touches thrown in for good measure. The painting is 10 ½” x 12 ½” total, including the wood frame. The artwork itself is 8” x 10”. The back is covered with brown paper and is ready to hang with screw eyes and wire. It is signed and dated Lana Manis 2009.

~* FRAKTUR FLOWERS TRIO *~

These were made in 2008. Just brought home from a shop, did a little re-do on them: painted the frames black and distressed a bit. The watercolors were inspired by frakturs and bookplates from the late 1700s to the early 1800s. They have been stained to look old. Signed and dated, Lana Manis 2008. Artwork measures 2 1/2" x 3 1/2"; frame is 4" x 5"; easel back.

This fraktur is painted with hand mixed artist watercolors in shades of sepia and blue. The flowers were inspired by those in an Ephrata Cloister Illumination from a 1750 manuscript choral book. Lots of detailing done by hand with India ink. Signed and dated Lana Manis 2009. Sealed with a watercolor sealant and preserved behind glass. Black wood frame is 9 1/4" x 11 1/4" with easel back.

~* SINGING BIRD *~

"I love to hear the little bird sing"

Singing bird mixed media acrylic painting.jpg (711505 bytes)

Acrylic painting on stretched canvas. Crackled background, tree, and bird have been painted with several layers of hand mixed acrylics and glazes. The little birds are cut from aged parchment paper that I stained with a pale aqua watercolor. The music is from antique sheet music. The words are vintage school cards. If you notice, the word LOVE is spelled with letter cards. I had painted the bird, then placed the words where I wanted them. Before I glued them down, I decided to dry the bird with the hair dryer... and you guessed it... the words went flying all over the place! I found all of them except for LOVE, so I had to use the letters to spell it out. I used aged parchment paper to make a scalloped border. Everything is sealed with a matte spray. Measures 10" x 10" square; backed with brown paper; ready to hang with screw eyes and wire.

~* A Bird in the Hand... *~

(urns)

I used one of my favorite quotes as inspiration for this watercolor: "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush."

This piece is also currently listed at American Folk Art. The overall size, including frame, is 9” x 11”. The vintage frame is a soft white, and is slightly shabby; it has a few chips in the paint. The background (sky, ground, urns, and bushes) is painted on 140lb cold press watercolor paper. All three birds were painted on a flyleaf page from a late 1800s book then cut out and applied to the bushes and the hand. The hand is made of aged, painted, and printed parchment paper. I wove the bird and hand together in the same manner as the 19th century style heart in hand pieces that I make. The quote, “A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush...” was printed on an 1800s flyleaf page, cut out with a deckle edge, and attached to the top of the painting. This original artwork is signed and dated Lana Manis 2009. It is protected by glass, backed with brown paper, and comes complete with screw eyes and wire and is ready to hang.

(heart topiary)

I used one of my favorite quotes as inspiration for this watercolor: "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush."

The overall size, including frame, is 8” x 9 1/2”. The wooden frame is vintage, slightly shabby and scuffed, and has a painted green trim on the inner edge which coordinates with the green in the painting perfectly. The background (sky, ground, moss covered urn, and heart shaped topiary) is painted on 90lb cold press watercolor paper. All of the birds were painted on aged parchment paper then cut out and applied to the bush and the hand. The hand is made of aged parchment paper and the cuff is made from a pale blue flyleaf page from an old book. The quote, “A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush...” was printed on an 1800s flyleaf page, cut out with a deckle edge, and attached to the bottom of the painting. This original artwork is signed and dated Lana Manis 2009. It is protected with glass, backed with brown paper, and comes complete with screw eyes and wire and is ready to hang.

~* BASKET TRIO *~

These original paintings are worked on aged parchment paper. I mixed medium and dark aqua, celery green, and sepia brown watercolors and detailed with sepia India ink. They were inspired by the fraktur work done in the mid to late 18th century. Artwork is 3 1/2" x 5" and the overall frame size is 4 3/4" x 6 1/4". Each one is framed behind glass in a solid oak wood frame, painted black, distressed, and hand rubbed with a beeswax finish. Each is backed with brown paper, and is ready for hanging with screw eyes and picture wire. All of my artwork is signed and dated Lana Manis 2008. Click on each photo for a larger view.
