~* Geometric Pin Cushion Box *~

(square box on left)

This box is covered with a copy of a turn of the eighteenth century block-printed wallpaper. I painted the inside of the box and lid to coordinate and sanded everything for an aged look. I made a dainty pincushion of silk dupionni, adding an amber-colored, faceted, bakelite button in the center to make it tufted. Three tiny vintage straight pins finish it off. Measures 3” x 3” x 1 ˝”. Signed and dated on the bottom, Lana Manis 2008.

This petite box is covered with 2 different wallpaper prints. The lid is covered with a copy of an early 1800s French, block-printed, ceiling decoration. The side is covered with a floral stripe copy from the late 1700s. I painted the inside to coordinate and then sanded everything for a worn look. I made a little tufted cushion to fit inside. It is made of pale gold silk damask on one side and a lovely aqua colored silk on the other side. Each side is embellished with a mother of pearl / abalone button. Three tiny silk pins finish it off. ~* Christmas Whimsy Cones *~

I have wrapped sturdy cones with Christmas sheet music from 1933 ~ not copies, but the originals. Each cone was then embellished with tarnished silver tinsel and a rusty jingle bell. I added black wire hangers to coordinate with the print on the paper. These hangers have my usual curlicues on the sides ~ it’s nearly impossible to work with wire and NOT want to add little twists and turns and spirals. Each cone is stuffed with crinkled brown paper shreds. They look so quaint and charming as is ~ or you may use these as dainty gift holders. These cones measure approximately 7” long.

* Whimsy Spirals *~

I thought the tree would look more complete with “fillers” and decided to make little whimsy spirals with rusty jingle bells dangling from the bottom. I used black wire to match the wire on the cones. These are 3” – 3 ˝” long.

~* MAY DEW GATHERING BASKETS *~

I adore reading 19th century books for young ladies, explaining all the dos and don’ts of etiquette, quaint traditions, and how to stay occupied, particularly with one’s hands. While reading a book written for young girls in 1887, I learned that according to traditions of merrie England, maids and matrons would go out bright and early on the first day of May and wash their faces in the dew. The dew, they believed, held magical qualities, which kept them looking young and beautiful for a year. Some ladies even went so far as to gather and save the glistening dew to moisten their faces until May 1st came ‘round again.

To continue this quaint custom, I have made for your pleasure, ~ MAY DEW GATHERING BASKETS ~. Just imagine this May, you and your friend, sister, mother, daughter, or granddaughter rising early on the first morn of May and gathering your very own May Dew! That will be such a sweet memory to cherish forever.

Using instructions from an early 19th century ladies book, I fashioned a miniature basket. The basket itself is made from aged paper and rusty wire. On the front it has a May Day poem: “Ho! The merrie first of Maie, Bryngs the daunce & blossoms gaie, To make of lyfe a holiday.” I’ve made a little nest of crinkled shredded paper, and upon that nest rests a tiny brown glass apothecary jar with cork. I made a tiny stained label for the jar that reads “May Dew”. The basket is signed and dated on the bottom, Lana Manis 2008. Along with the MAY DEW GATHERING BASKET, you will receive a card with a copy of an engraving from one of the books that shows a young girl with a basket, and on the inside will be an explanation of this olde custom. Please note: The photo below shows the jar with a curlicue wire handle / hanger. If you want a handle, please let me know and I will make one for your May Dew jar. The basket measures 4” tall including the handle; the diminutive May Dew jar is 1 ˝” tall without the cork. These are fiddly little pieces, and take some time with all the ageing, measuring, cutting, and manipulation of paper, but I think you will agree that they are adorable!

Thank you for such a wonderful response!

~* May Baskets *~

"Ho! The merrie first of Maie

Bryngs the daunce and blossoms gaie

To make of lyfe a holiday."

I have made these paper baskets in the manner described by the Beard sisters in the 1880s ~ from the scalloped papers to the hand sewn sides and the ribbon handles. I have added a poem (as written above) to the front of each basket, but the basket may be flipped to display the other side, when May Day is past. Vintage style, textured, heavy paper was cut into panels, and then hand sewn together with 100% silk ribbon. I added delicate, hand pleated, crepe paper ruffles around the top of the baskets. Beautiful wired ribbon was used for the handles and each basket is filled with poufs of tissue paper and crinkled shredded paper. Each basket is 6 ˝” tall not including the handle. Signed and dated on the bottom, Lana Manis 2008. The baskets are ready for you to add a special May Day gift and surprise a neighbor or loved one by leaving it on their front door.

A Bird in the Hand...

"A Bird in the Hand..." is something I designed after pondering the saying "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush". The saying has been around for centuries in several variances though the earliest didn't refer to birds, but other animals instead.

Two examples that used birds are:

"A byrd in hand - is worth ten flye at large." 1530

"Better one byrde in hande than ten in the wood." John Heywood, the 16th century collector of proverbs, recorded this version in 1546.
