~ Valentines & Love Tokens ~

A token of love is perfect for sharing any day of the year ~ not just February 14th.

An anniversary, a birthday, an engagement, an I-Love-You-for-being-you day, an I'm-sorry day, a best-friend-in-the-world day, whatever the reason, whatever the occasion, a token of love is always appreciated and deserved.

...only a few left of each type of love token... thank you for such a great response!

LOVE TOKEN CHARMS:

Each charm has a paper heart & hand, double hearts, or winged hearts that I have hand cut and hand woven. I used parchment paper that I aged, stained, and gave a wash of watercolor ~ some have been printed with copies of 18th and 19th century letters. I have enclosed the love tokens in glass and hand soldered with lead-free, pewter-finish solder. Each piece was then sanded, some were treated with a patina finish, sealed with a finishing compound, and hand buffed.

~ Puzzle Purse Valentines ~

Be sure to look at the Christmas 2007 issue of Early American Life to see my puzzle purse valentines.

I am honored to have been chosen for the 2nd year in a row for their Holiday Directory.

Messages of LOVE are written on these Valentines which are folded in a precise intricacy so that as you open it according to the numbered sections, you read a verse or a phrase, and tiny hand painted pictures are revealed. The very inner most part of the Valentine sometimes has woven paper hearts or a woven paper heart and hand. They are sometimes tricky for the recipient to re-fold, which is part of the charm of the puzzle purse. These were inspired by the ones originally made in the late 1700s and the early 1800s. All artwork, which is a combination of naive / schoolgirl art / fraktur influences, is done with watercolors and India ink on new or aged (with a coffee or tea and vanilla mixture) parchment paper. I have searched through my American folk art books for ideas for flowers, birds, and other early American designs. I use poems of the 1700s and 1800s along with some of my own original phrases. Keep in mind these are hand done, so each one will be unique. The valentines measure 2 ½” square closed and 7 ½” square when fully opened. Each valentine comes with a 3" papier mache box decorated with a coordinating design (see photos above for examples).

The papers are aged, distressed, and sealed. Next I do all of the cutting to size and folding. After that, each design is sketched in pencil, then painted with artist watercolors and outlined with sepia India ink. After all paints and inks have dried, I cut, fold, and weave the little heart and hand paper whimsies to go inside the valentines. Last, I fold the puzzle back into a little square for you to discover it's secret. Then it's on to the papier mache boxes. Each one is base coated, the designs are sketched, then painted and outlined same as with the valentines. After the paint has dried, the boxes are aged, distressed, and given a hand rubbed finish.

~ Cobweb Valentines ~

Often called cobweb, birdcage, or beehive valentines, these delicate tokens of love were popular during the early to mid 19th century. Most featured a watercolor or lithographed image on the front, then opened to another work of art inside. This work of art was cut in intricate detail and had a string attached to the center. When the string was lifted, the artwork magically spiraled open to reveal a third image underneath. These Cobweb Valentines are on a 5 1/2" x 8 1/2" heavyweight parchment card with ivory parchment paper insert and comes with a 5 3/4" x 8 3/4" white envelope. All images are hand painted with watercolors and India ink and are signed and dated by the artist. You may write your own message of love or friendship inside the front cover, or around the cobweb.

~ Valentine Cards ~

Inspired by love tokens of the 18th and 19th centuries, these paper pretties are sweet and sentimental. I have intertwined aged parchment paper hearts and hands and affixed them to acid free ivory cards which have a deckle edge. They are blank inside to write your own message of love or friendship. They come with matching envelopes and measure 4" x 5 1/2". Your choice of watercolor (reds and blues) or aged ivory (ivory and brown). You will receive 1 each of heart in hand, winged hearts, woven hearts horizontal, and woven hearts vertical; designs will vary slightly due to the handmade nature ~ they are cut freehand ~ no patterns are used.

Set of 4 (choice of Watercolor or Aged Ivory)
